The South East Powerboat Association was formed in 2008 by a group of offshore powerboat racers and enthusiasts, who wished to revive interest in offshore racing, particularly in the South East of England and to promote events from club class right through to national championship level.
Offshore Circuit Racing, or OCR, has developed over many years and the spectacularly close action and fierce competition, makes it popular with competitors and spectators alike. SEPA wants to restore it to its heyday, when fields of up to forty boats battled it out in front of tens of thousands of spectators.
Its affordability, in relation to other mechanised sports on land and sea, means that many ski club members could race their own weekend boats with minimal modification and lots of fun was enjoyed by families and friends.
SEPA wants to promote powerboat racing at grass roots level by organising events, under the jurisdiction of the RYA, within clubs, between clubs and regions, with the more determined entrants going on to compete in the national series and some clubs hosting their own major, national, events.
We aim to encourage the thrill of participation through simple rules, manageable courses and maximum safety. To reduce the cost to competitors, we are working with promoters to subsidise expenses through innovative and exciting marketing. 2010 sees us organising major events at Harwich and Ramsgate in association with Ensign Craft, promoters of large scale music festivals that combine with powerboat racing, to produce the finance and excitement that gel the events. Visitors to these events will certainly experience an adrenalin rush, being caught in the spray of 2000 hp boats attempting 100mph passes along the beach.
If you would like to become a member of SEPA and get involved in this exciting sport, either as a competitor, safety boat, or helper, SEPA will always make you feel welcome. We will be organising taster days, training days and even have-a-go days.
