Offshore Powerboat Racing in the UK is probably one of the best examples of an extreme watersport; it is both challenging and highly competitive. Most first time racers usually start in CLUB racing and adapt their existing ski boat or inflatable to conform with Club Rules.
You will need certain basic safety equipment, a licence to race and belong to an affiliated racing club. Competitors who are new to the sport will be required to undertake a training programme prior to being issued with a powerboat racing licence. SEPA reqularly host Training days, full details of which can be found by clicking on Powerboat Race Training. This one day training programme is delivered in accordance with the RYA's guidelines on Training and covers both theory and practical 'on the water' assessments. These training sessions usually run on a Friday and are attached to club races to keep the cost of entry to a minimum. Check the 2012 Calendar to see the next available training session.
Once you have completed your training, you can purchase an RYA Event Licence at a cost of £75 from the Race Administrators, which covers you for third party liability throughout the training session and the race event - click on licence information to see how to obtain your licence.
CLUB events normally take place
alongside the national events
and there is always somebody
at hand to lend a propeller
or give some friendly advice!
New competitors will also be required to complete a Self Declaration Medical Form declaring their fitness to compete before purchasing their Event Licence, which is obtainable on race day. Only two self declaration medicals can be used before a full medical is required, afterwhich a provisional licence can be applied for from the RYA by downloading a 2012 Licence Application Form.
Once all the boring (but necessary) paperwork is out of the way - you are then ready for your first race........... For Further information on classes available, click on Offshore Powerboat Racing to download our brochure.
